Nintendo Entertainment System
My First list will be for the NES, or, Nintendo Entertainment System. The console was released in America in 1985.
Super Mario Bros / Duck hunt Combo Cart.
Official Score: 10/10
This cart came with the 1990 redistribution of the NES. The system came with two controlers, an orange gun controller for Duck Hunt, and the aforementioned cart. Super Mario Bros. Was THE first "side-scrolling" platforming game. The first platformer, arguably, is DonkeyKong from the arcade.
Duck Hunt was the first game to use the NES "Zapper". The original American version had the 1ducks and 2ducks options. however, the version within this cart, is the Pre-NES Famicom 1994 version from Japan, which includes the Clay Shooting alternative game, where you shoot at clay disks shot from a cannon.
Super Mario Bros. is one of the most well-constructed, challenging, fun, and original games, EVER! A truely skilled player can maneuvor through the levels and maximize their movements to score, keep alive, and collect the various items and power-ups. This one deserves to be coated in pure gold and labeled in colored diamond fragments.

Kabuki: Quantam Fighter
Official Score: 9.4/10
This is one of the strangest things to spawn from Japan(^_^). The game's story starts with a worldwide crash in the computer systems, AKA, The internet is screwed. It seems an evil force is at work. A new bio/mechanical prototype experiment, which, if it works correctly, will convert a human brain into Binary data, capable of exploring the system freely. You are Scott O'Connor, a military operative with training in both combat and computer programing. You are the one that was choosen go inside the worldwide computer systems, find this virus, and take it down. When you enter the computer world, the first thing you notice is the form you've taken, A Kabuki Character (Japanese Actor in a play). As you continue the game, the cutscenes explain that the virus is trying to completely overtake the world's weapons systems to destroy the entire planet (hey, it was original for it's time...).
The gameplay resembles that of Ninja Gaiden, in it's quick and precise movements, with you long red hair as your main weapon. After each level, you recieve another weapon, which you can switch with the select button, and use with B+Up (Like Castlevania). If you skip through the cutscenes, the game is not that long, but the platforming will definately frustrate some, and provoke others with it's challenge. The graphics are very good, and on a traditional tube-television (I have this early 80's Dial TV...Perfect!) look very good, and the environments look very menacing, and original, as in not your traditional grass/water/sand/lava worlds, but you will see giant beating hearts and veins pumping through a digital construction, with the occasional skull face here and there.

Sega Genesis
Next, I'll do games for the Sega Genesis 16bit console. Released in America in 1989, but reached it's popularity at 1991, with the release of Sonic The Headgehog.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Official Score: 8.2/10
Honestly, I don't like the art work on the cartridge, mostly because it's so darn goofy! I thought it was a very simple childrens game the first time I saw it. In fact, it's thefirst game made just for the Sega Genesis, other games before it were arcade ports for games such as Outrun, Strider, and Super Hang-On. The game was designed specifically to showcase the true capacity of the new Sega console. since this was made in 1989, Super mario bros. 3 wasn't around to inspire the platforming, making it somewhat simple. This game was the only direct sequel to Alex Kidd in Miricle World on the Sega Master System. The gameplay is very similar to the somewhat unknown 8-bit game, but featuresd a few new abilities, items and level hazzards. You begin in a turquoise-skyed town, where you can enter the buildings, and compete with the characters in a game of Janken (Rock, Paper Scissors). If you win, you are given a helpful item, such as a Helicoptor, Motercycle, Power Ring (adds an energy shot to your punches and kicks.) The platforming is very in depth, featuring secrets and hidden tunnels for you to explore. Over All, I great game, not too long to complete, but the last level is about as long as the rest of the game, an unexpected twist that makes beating this title much more satasfying. The graphics are very well made, but somewhat simple and cartoony.
Valis - the Fantasm Soldier
Official score: 7.6 / 10
Back in the day, it was not uncommon to see strange Japanese titles sent to america, translated poorly, and sold. this is one of those. There are actually two versions of this, the other one, Syd of Valis, is a more cartoony, childish version. The game stars a young, blue haired school girl, named Valis. she is confronted by a long time friend, who begins telling her strange things will happen. A sword falls into her grasp, and she is attacked by demons from "Fantasy world". the game is a simple action-platformer, where you progress by defeating boss battles and gaining their powers. It features nice anime-style cenimatics, and a fairly deep story, even though the translation from japanese to english is very rough, and gramatically incorrect, you will feel for the characters in their struggle. the game is fairly short, as with most early Genesis titles, but is a satasfying play.
